How To Kill Your Creative Flesh
We all have a spirit man and a flesh man (or woman). As Christians we are all aware of the struggle that goes on between the two. As artists we also must be aware that our flesh has a right and a left brain. Let me explain. The right brain is the creative side while the left brain is the logical side.
The right brain of my flesh man is where all the emotional fleshly stuff comes from. Jealousy, ego, attitude, etc. Most of those things are not logical. They “attack” me through my emotions.
I reciently came across a line in “Blue Like Jazz” (which so far is a very though provoking book). It said, “The soul of man, unwatched, is preverse.” Wow that is true. When we think there is no accountability we all get a little off. The only issue is that my “creative right brain” hates accountability. it feels it is stifling. I think things like, “everything is subjective” when they try to coach me. Or, “i know they think it goes better when it’s that way, but i see more clearly.” Now, i don’t say these things, but this is the battle that goes on with my “creative flesh”
“The soul of man, unwatched, is perverse.” was such a revelation to me because the very thing that urks my creative side it the one thing that will keep it from preverting. Just something to ponder.
